How to Touch Up Interior Wall Paint
Even with the best paint job and the best paint available, any wall will end up with inevitable nicks and marks that can really take away from the overall look of a quality paint job. Sometimes it seems that all you can see is the blemish in the wall everytime you walk past. The big question here is “can you touch up the paint in the middle of the wall?”
Well first things first. If its a scuff or mark try to first use a damp cloth with warm water and gently try and rub the mark away. Keep in mind paints with higher sheens are more resilient to rubbing and moisture as opposed to matte finishes.
Now if this doesn’t work we have to move into repainting. Now if you notice the nick has actually inverted the drywall leaving an indent of some kind you will want to fill the gap with some kind of drywall filler. Allow to dry and than lightly sand to that it is perfectly level with the surrounding wall. This may take a few times to get it just right.
Touching up paint in the middle of the wall without re-doing the entire section can only be done when:
* the paint originally used is flat or matte finish allowing for now sheen difference
* On very minor flaws that are not in obvious locations.
If this is not the case and it is a higher sheen finish such as eggshell you will want to first paint the dry exposed patch (if any). This is called spot priming. Once that is dry you will want to repaint the entire section of the wall from corner to corner to get an even sheen.
On a wall that has been painted with a flat matte finish, you can just touch up the affected area only trying use a minimal amount of paint and feather out the edges as to not leave any ridges.
If the nick is small enough you can use an artists brush to touch up leaving a minimal amount of paint on the wall.
